With the growing popularity of flat screen TVs, and the Feb. 2009 switch to digital TV signals looming, the sheer volume of TVs headed to our landfills has gotten out of control.

Only 12% of “e-waste” is recycled (US EPA) because there are simply too few options for convenient recycling. EPA studies also show that 70% of heavy metal such as lead and mercury in garbage dumps comes from electronic waste.

It’s time to hold TV manufacturers responsible just as they are in other countries of the world—including Japan, Taiwan and throughout the European Union. Despite making billions in profits importing and selling TVs, manufacturers currently play no role in safely dealing with the waste.
But recently, Sony has taken a leadership role by launching the first “TV Take-Back Program” in the United States. The gateway is now open for others to follow.
Countdown to Contamination
Activists in Texas and across the country marked the one-year countdown to the digital switch by demonstrating as "dead TVs walking." If TV makers don't start recycling their toxic products, the TVs will come back to haunt us!
