Join us for a wonderful evening to mark TCE's 15th anniversary!
~ Concert by Austin's own Bruce Robison
~ Honoring two individuals who moved into the national spotlight for their courageous stance against dirty and unfair prison recycling of electronic waste - Leroy Smith & David Ritter*
~ Featuring food from great local Austin restaurants
~ Book signing for two new books on high tech trash
* Leroy Smith was the Safety Manager at the federal penitentiary in Atwater California. He filed under the Whistleblower Protection Act concerning federal prison staff and inmate workers being exposed to high levels of toxic chemicals (lead, cadmium, barium, beryllium etc.) while working in e-waste recycling factories unprotected. His evidence proved that prison recycling of hazardous e-waste endangers the health and safety of inmates, correctional officers, their families, and the environment. Click here for Washington Post story of the recent cancellation of his federal whistleblower award ceremony.
* David Ritter, a responsible e-waste recycler, had to lay off 65 percent of his staff when the Department of Defense gave his contract away, without a bid, to Federal Prison Industries (FPI). Ritter fought back when FPI was later allowed to bid on contracts set aside for small businesses even though FPI is a $600 million operation. Ritter hired attorneys and forced the EPA to terminate FPI's small business contract last year. Click here for more details on the case.
