Encourage Officials to Ensure Convenient and Responsible Television Recycling Programs

Electronics contain an array of toxic materials, including lead, mercury, and PCB-like brominated flame-retardants, among others. Due to the presence of these toxic materials, landfilling, incinerating, or exporting electronics is not a safe option for disposal. Domestic recycling of electronics ensures that electronics are being processed safely, creates jobs, and recovers materials that can be used to manufacture more electronics.

In 2011, after years of pressure from TCE and our supporters, the Texas Legislature passed a Texas Television TakeBack Law (SB 329) that requires television manufacturers to provide consumers with free recycling for obsolete TVs. The Texas Television TakeBack Law (SB 329) is a huge victory, but we still need to work to ensure that all Texans will have access to convenient recycling options. TCE is continuing to work with state lawmakers and electronics retailers to keep e-waste out of our landfills.

Since Texas still has no laws against dumping toxic e-waste in our landfills, that still where about 80% of our old and obsolete electronics end up. State legislators should add Texas to the list of 15 states with effective laws prohibiting electronic waste from disposal in landfills. You can encourage your state lawmakers to support this legislation today. Your letters have played a key role in our progress so far and will continue to make a big impact on this issue.

We need our officials to create rules that will give Texans convenient and responsible recycling programs for televisions. Democracy works best when the people participate!
